What Happened in the TI 2023 Regional Qualifiers?
China
The first team to qualify for The Interantional 2023 was Azure Ray. Azure Ray only officially formed in May in order to make a push toward TI13; featuring the legendary former PSG.LGD trio of f Lu “Somnus” Yao, Yang “chalice” Shenyi, and Xu “fy” Linsen. Their experience and skill showed in the early stages, as they advanced through the early bracket defeating Team Bright, 2-1, before sweeping Invictus Gaming, 2-0, to get their first shot at Xtreme Gaming in the upper bracket finals. The finals, a rematch with Xtreme, proved a much tighter contest, with an incredibly back-and-forth series between the two. Azure Ray managed to battle their way to a 2-1 lead, before dominating in convincing fashion to see the series out 3-1.
North America
For the NA TI 2023 regional qualifiers, Nouns became the second team to qualify in decisive fashion. Nouns have been the third-best team in the NA region across this DPC season, and the qualifiers only proved that point. They swept through the bracket, even dominating the final cleanly with a 3-0 sweep over Dendi’s B8 roster. B8 did put up a fight, particularly in game 3 as B8 faced elimination, extending the game to 56 minutes with an unorthodox Witchdocter mid pick; however, Nouns prowess showed to see out the series.
South America
In South America, both Keyd Stars and Thunder Awaken made it through the brackets to qualify. The Brazilian team Keyd Sars bounced back from relegation to Division II to secure their spot in TI through the open qualifiers, with Constabile and 4nalog playing starring roles.
Meanwhile, Thunder Awaken were clear favourites and lived up to expectations. It was not easy, however, as they initially lost to Keyd Stars and instead had to battle through the lower bracket. Nevertheless, in spite of successive 2-1s leading up to the grand finals, they blew AcatSuki away to secure their place at TI.
Western Europe
Western Europe was by far the most competitive region, with 2 teams qualifying to and the majority being worthy of spots. Entity secured the first place, with some incredible performances overcoming the likes of Team Secret to book their place in TI 2023.
Quest, however, lost to Entity in the Upper Bracket, and had to overcome OG, Team Secret, and Luna Galaxy. It was a tough road, but Quest certainly grew into the tournament and showed their class.
Eastern Europe
VP entered as heavy favourites to win the qualifier, having had consistent fourth place finishes in the DPC all season. They started strong with a 2-0 victory over Matreshka, and compounded that with a 2-1 over rivals Na’Vi. VP secured their place with a resounding 3-0 victory over One Move.
Southeast Asia
After many years of trying, Team SMG finally make it to TI. It was a comprehensive qualification too, overcoming Blacklist Rivarly 2-0 and 3-0 across two series in the qualifiers.
