What is the Thunderpick World Championship 2023?

This is a tournament hosted by the well known esports bookmaker Thunderpick. They are well known for focusing on esports tournaments as well as providing an outlet for betting for those who prefer to deposit with cryptocurrency. More information can be found in our Thunderpick betting review.

The first edition of the Thunderpick World Championship starts on October 27 where teams will play for 10 days. The champion will be crowned on November 5th 2023. In total there are 16 top Counter-Strike teams vying for glory.

Tournament Format

There are 2 stages to the Thunderpick World Championship 2023. To start with 16 teams are split into four groups of 4. Each group is played in a double-elimination format, also known as GSL. In total there will be the top 2 teams of each group qualifying to the playoff stage. All matches are played as best of 3 (Bo3). The format is almost identical to the Roobet Cup 2023 which is happening at the same time.

The playoff stage will have 8 teams who qualified from the group stage into a single elimination bracket. That means there are no second chances at all in the final stage of the tournament. All matches in the playoff will be played as Bo3, also on CS2.

Prize Pool

There is a total prize pool of $500,000 USD which is split among the top 8 teams in the competition. The prize pool distribution for Thunderpick World Championship 2023 is below.

If you come between 9th-16th then you will not receive any prize money. So that means there is a lot of tension between teams to make sure you secure a spot in the playoffs.

The Thunderpick World Championship 2023 is hosted on GRID’s Twitch channel which is linked below. Interestingly, GRID is a data provider for esports. They take data from game servers and share the data with traders at different bookmakers. This means that this tournament will have live data available for different betting operator partners. You can tell which betting site has access to the data due to how many markets they offer, how long the markets stay open and what the maximum bet size looks like.

The talent for this event is definitely different to other tier 1 events.
