Since the group stage of TI12, through to the Grand Final, Team Spirit only lost a total of 2 games. Those games were against Virtus.pro and Team Liquid which were both in the upper bracket. They won 90.47% of their games (19 wins – 2 losses). The next highest win-rate is Na’Vi back in the first ever TI who had 90% win rate (9 wins – 1 loss). Some commenters are saying that this record will never be broken in Dota 2 esports already.
In the grand final Team Spirit did not drop a single game. They had incredible drafts throughout the series and, despite some close occasions, managed to see it through to the end. The hard carry of the team, Yatoro, is seen as MVP of the tournament. With amazing versatility among different heroes, and phenomenal itemisation, judgement, farming and game sense, was always able to surpass his opponents. Over all improving on his TI10 victory.
Viewership for Team Spirit’s Win in TI12
The International 2023 had a peak viewership of 1,442,274 during the grand final between Team Spirit and Gaimin Gladiators. The second most viewed match was LGD versus Gaimin Gladiators in the lower bracket with a peak of 1,270,321 concurrent viewers. This has confirmed TI12 to be the most watched Dota 2 North American event ever after TI8 which had 1.2 million concurrent viewers.
Some say that viewership is also determined by the amount of money in the prize pool. This isn’t necessarily true as we have seen with the statistics above. It is great to see that viewership was quite solid, even if it felt that engagement with the game and the community was not quite as high. It does bring a lot of hope for Dota 2 in 2024 where there will be a revamped competitive circuit. We already have the next major event set for December which will be ESL One Kuala Lumpur.
Perhaps the prize money next year will be bigger, which might increase the viewership. Over all this is down to the Compendium sales where a portion of the income generated goes to the prize pool. However, there is already news indicating that the largest prize pool tournament in Dota 2 could end up going to the Esports World Cup. This would act as a successor to Gamers8 tournament, Riyadh Masters 2023, which already had a $15,000,000 USD prize pool. There is only one way to find out! And that’s by staying tuned for more Dota 2 esports news.
