This announcement sets up December to be an exciting month for esports when it can otherwise by very quiet! ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 has been announced with a large prize pool for 12 teams in total. This will be taking place after TI12 (The International), which means it will be soon after the expect annual team shuffle. Malaysia, part of the SEA region, is home to a fanatical Dota 2 audience. It is sure to be a phenomenal way to wrap up the 2023 calendar year for Dota 2 esports.
In 2022 ESL hosted the ESL One Malaysia event with a $400,000 prize pool which was eventually won by OG. They beat Team Aster in the grand final 3-0 after making an enormous run in the lower bracket. Ultimately they took home a total of $150,000 for this win.
ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 Teams and Tournament Format
There format has been confirmed to have two stages. We also have more information about the teams participating and how to qualify. ESL are trying to attracts many of the strongest teams in the world for this event. This is to be the biggest Dota 2 event since The International 2023.
Format
This is a 2 stage format comprising of 12 total teams. It will be moving from a group stage to a playoff.
- Group Stage
- Two round-robin groups of 6 teams each
- All series to be Best of 2 (Bo2)
- Top two teams of each group advance to upper bracket of playoffs
- 3rd and 4th teams of each group advance to lower bracket of playoffs
- Remaining 2 teams are eliminated from the competition
- Playoffs
- Double-elimination bracket
- All matches are Bo3 (except Grand Final)
- Grand Final is Bo5
Teams
4 teams are to be invited for ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023. The remaining teams will qualify through different regional events. There will be two teams from Eastern Europe qualifiers. Then a further 1 team from qualifiers in Western Europe, MENA, China, Southeast Asia, North America and South America.

Team Spirit was also invited but had to pull out due to health concerns from members in the team. This means that ESL One Kuala Lumpur will not have the team that won TI12. This will surely be a blow to the quality of games at the event, considering how dominant Team Spirit was earlier this year.

What is the ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 prize pool?
There is no information at all surrounding the full break down of the prize money. However, it has been confirmed that the prize pool itself will be $1,000,000 USD. This is the largest prize pool for an ESL One Dota 2 event since ESL One Birmingham in 2018.

The dates for the event in Kuala Lumpur where the public can attend is as follows:
- Start: 11 December
- End: 17 December
It is expected that the main stage matches with a large audience will take place from the 15th December. This will take place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

ESL One have announced ticket sales on their website from the 21st of September at 15:00 MYT (Malaysia Time). They have 3 types of tickets on offer which include:
- Premium 3-day ticket (499 RM/$105)
- Plus 3-day ticket (299 RM/$64)
- Regular 3-day ticket (149 RM/$32)
