DRX – The Ultimate Underdogs Story At Worlds 2022

DRX‘s victory at 2022 World Championship was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They entered as ultimate underdogs, defying all expectations to lift the trophy. To celebrate this incredible achievement, Riot Games produced a behind-the-scenes documentary that covers this unbelievable moment of League of Legends history.

How Did DRX Win?

DRX were the first ever team to win coming from the Play-In stage; with all other previous winners having come directly from the Group Stage. They overcame all odds in the finals, defeating heavy favourites T1 3-2 and securing their place in history.

The headlines were all about Faker, the GOAT of League of Legends, who was looking to secure his fifth championship. However, it was a fellow Korean ADC “Deft” who stole the show. Ironically, Deft came from the same highschool as Faker, and so there is a sense of irony there as he was able to overcome the legend that is Faker.

Nobody expected DRX to pass the Play-Ins, but instead they dominated both the Play-Ins and then their group, finishing first. Even in spite of these excellent performances, nobody truly expected DRX to progress through the bracket, let alone win.

It was not easy, having to overcome global powerhouses EDward Gaming, Gen.G and finally T1, but DRX showed immense mental and mechanical skill to overcome all odds.

Where Can You Watch The DRX Documentary?

The epic story was produced by Red Bull Media House in collaboration with Riot Games. The hour-long documentary features real footage from the event as well as interviews with DRX players on the experience. It can be watched for free on the LoL Esports Youtube channel.

Where Are The Players Now?

Even though DRX won, only one players from the championship team remains – Beryl. Largely because of this, DRX had a subpar 2023 and finished 7th in LCK 2023, meaning they cannot now defend their title in their home country of South Korea.

However, both Deft and Pyosik will both attend this years worlds, representing Dplus Kia and Team Liquid respectively. Top laner Kingen and mid laner Zeka both failed to qualify after falling out in the LCK Regional Finals.
