What is Esports?

The industry is now more and more widely recognised. Parents and children are talking about it and it is suddenly becoming a more accepted part of mainstream society. But where does it come from? Every year it is rising in popularity and only in recent years has it exploded. There’s a good reason for this!

Esports can no longer be ignored.

In its purest form, esports exists as soon as any video game has a form of competition. As long as there is either prize money, prestige or simply bragging rights – suddenly it becomes esports. It is more easily recognised this way once you increase the stakes at play and the organisations involved. But at its very core, it can simply be two people playing Fortnite to see who pays for the next drink.

Prizes in tournaments can range from $0, all the way to $40,000,000+. In early 2023 Gamers8 announced the largest esports prize pool in history (spread across multiple games at one event). It is now very common in more mainstream games for prize pools to exceed $1,000,000 per event. Players and teams are always fighting for the number one spot, and to make sure they qualify to the next big tournament.

In its modern form, it was born in 1997 after the release of Quake World (1996). The Quake franchise is regarded as the godfather of esports. In 1997 John Carmack, a lead developer of Quake, put his Ferrari 328 up as a prize for a Quake tournament. This tournament was won by Denis ‘Thresh’ Fong. It was at this point that people realised you could earn money from playing video games.

While Quake was popular in the 1990’s and the early 2000’s, it was also joined by StarCraft and Counter-Strike (CS 1.6 and Source). Over time the most popular esports games started to shift. New games came in and old games became outdated. It became a battle for longevity. In the early 2010’s, streaming became a new phenomenon. With the birth of own3d.tv and justin.tv/twitch.tv, suddenly it became accessible.

And as more people have gained access to the internet, more people of all generations have started digesting esports content. Just as people want to watch their favourite football players, people also want to see the best players play on the most popular games.
