GLOSSARY – ESPORTS BETTING TERMINOLOGY
This glossary will help you learn about the esports betting terminology you might be unfamiliar with. There are plenty of terms worth being familiar with. Especially when occasionally there are several terms used to explain the same thing. Below is a breakdown of different terms which are used in competitive gaming and betting that you might come across via an esports bookmaker.
Accumulator – (Same as Multiple and Parlay)
A combination of bets (more than one) where success requires all selections to win. For example: Betting on the winner of 2 separate matches.
American Odds
American Odds use positive (+) numbers to show potential profit on a $100 bet for underdogs, and negative (-) numbers to indicate the amount needed to bet for a $100 profit on favourites. Arb
An abbreviation of Arbitrage
Arbitrage
Securing a positive return by wagering on every possible outcome in a betting market, using multiple bookmakers to take advantage of varying odds, ultimately capitalising on the price differences. See more here
Bankroll
The total amount of money a person has set aside for gambling.
Bookmaker (Bookie)
An organization or person that accepts bets on the outcome of sporting events and pays out winnings.
Decimal Odds
A way of displaying odds that includes the stake in the return. For example, a bet with decimal odds of 2.0 would return twice the stake for a win.
Even Money
A bet where the potential winnings are the same as the stake.
Favorites
The team or competitor that is considered most likely to win according to the odds.
Fractional Odds
A way of displaying odds as a fraction, showing how much a bettor stands to win in relation to their stake.
Handicap
A system used by bookmakers to make a one-sided event become a more attractive betting proposition. The weaker competitor is given a head start (handicap) by the bookmaker.
In-Play Betting
Bets placed after an event has started and up to its conclusion.
Long Odds
This means that the event is unlikely to happen.
Money Line
A bet where the gambler only needs the team they bet on to win without any point spread.
Odds
The likelihood of a specific outcome happening, usually displayed in fractional, decimal, or moneyline format.
Over/Under Betting (Totals Betting)
A bet on whether the total points/goals scored by the two teams will be over or under a specific number.
Prop Bet (Proposition Bet)
A bet on a specific aspect of an event which doesn’t necessarily correlate to the final outcome.
Short Odds
This means that the event is likely to happen.
Spread Betting
A form of betting where the winnings or losses are determined by the margin of victory or defeat of the team you bet on.
Stake
The amount of money placed on a bet.
Teaser
A type of parlay bet that allows the bettor to adjust the point spreads for the chosen games.
Underdog
The team or competitor that is considered least likely to win according to the odds.
Vigorish (or Vig or Juice)
The fee or commission that a bookmaker or sportsbook charges for taking a bet from a gambler.
